Lillies for Sale

This story follows the life of Given, a former self - confessed 'crime boy' who is now trying to make an honest living through the sale of lillies in Grahamstown. He tells us why he decided to stop doing crime and the difficulties he has faced since he started selling lillies.

"On the Streets of Grahamstown" An Overview

By Daniella Potter

This blog is used as a platform by third year Journalism and Media Studies students at Rhodes University. The information which we are exhibiting is part of a Critical Media Production (CMP) course. We are using civic journalism to show the Grahamstown community how crime affects it and how the community can work together in order to alleviate some of the petty thefts that occur.

Our project focuses on the Central Business District (CBD) and the residential area of Oatlands. We have found that the CBD is a transient space as everyone that lives in Grahamstown has to enter it at some point or another. Therefore there is a lack of community between people in the CBD. This was demonstrated when we held a focus group discussion to talk to the community about the crime that affects them or has affected them in the past. Out of the nine confirmed guests, only two people attended our focus group. We have sensed that there is a large amount of apathy among people ranging from formal business owners to car guards and street vendors. Even in the Oatlands community there was a lack of willingness to talk about crime.

It is our hope that through showing the CBD people and Oatlands residents our research, it will help them to find their voice and unify themselves in a sense of community to help each other to solve crime on the streets of Grahamstown.

Our research is presented on this blog as:
two television documentaries produced by three television students
an audio sound slide produced by a radio and a photojournalism student
a print publication produced by three writing and editing students and designed by two design students
a brochure produced by a design student
a poster produced by a design student

We would appreciate your comment on our research.
